The week of June 21st started kind of rough for Maria. Fighting off the affects of food poisoning, completing a week of school in which she had to make up for time lost (due to missing a few days school from the food poisoning) and packing and prepping for the weekend was just the beginning of Maria's week. After an already long week, Friday night brought a long red-eye flight with a connection to Roanoke, VA and a 3 hour drive to the Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia. That pretty much took most of the day Saturday. But that wasn't all... heap on top of all that lost luggage by the airline! You guessed it. All her gear was packed in the lost luggage. When the airline representative first showed up at 3am Sunday morning, he brought someone elses luggage. After some convincing, he left with that other poor soul's luggage. Miraculously, at 7am Maria got a call from the front desk saying that her luggage was at the front desk (nearly half a mile away up the mountain). Maria's mother hitched a ride on the back of some passer-by on the back of his KTM 80 and she got Maria's bags to her just in time! Thank you mom!!!

How did all this adversity affect Maria? After a quick oatmeal breakfast, Maria pulled on her new MSR gear, strapped on her Bell helmet, grabbed her RPM/Factory KTM250XCF and rode one of the most difficult races of the season, racking up her 7th staight GNCC win going into the summer break with her first GNCC championship in hand. Did she just barely make it? Hardly! All that adversity be danged, Maria won the race by nearly 10 minutes ahead of her closest competitor! "It was so much fun!," Maria said. "There was this long uphill bottleneck after the first lap. I just took off my goggles and had to wait my turn. I bet there were over 100 riders waiting to get up the hill! Lots of rocks and hills. I didn't have too much trouble with the hill. You just had to get a little run to make it up. After that, the rest of the course was fun!"Â Was that the end of Maria's long week? Heck no, immediately after the race it was off on the 3 hour drive back to the Roanoke airport for a connecting flight to Washington DC and finally another flight on to Sea-Tac, arriving after 1am Monday morning. Three hours sleep and it was back in school bright and early later Monday morning.

After a tough start, Maria digs her way back from 7th, after the first lap, to pull out a spot on the podium with 3rd place at GNCC Rd 2 in Washington, GA.

So Cool! I have set up this little notifier on google that notifies me any time news is posted on the internet with Maria's name in the title. I was so excited to find a notice telling me that Maria has been nominated to be the AMA's female racer of the year for 2009 for her performance at the International Six Days Enduro in Portugal!
I know the holidays are busy for everyone but that is my excuse for being a little late telling you about Maria and our trip to the 2009 Endurocross final in Las Vegas this past November 21st. We had a great time this year, as we always do! Maria's mother Cherryl and I drove down with the travel trailer on Tuesday and Wednesday. Maria flew down on Thursday evening with her boyfriend and her father and his friend.
